(ALBANY, Ore. ) - The City of Albany will celebrate National Arbor Week, April 6-12, by giving away young trees, hosting a tree identification walk, and listening to music by students from Liberty Elementary School. Arbor Day events are scheduled from 9:30 AM to noon Saturday, April 12, in the plaza at Albany City Hall, 333 Broadalbin St. SW. One hundred live trees will be provided for individuals who want them, and refreshments will be served. The activities will also mark Albany once again earning the Tree City USA award from the National Arbor Day Foundation. Albany has won the honor, which recognizes city government’s commitment to the community forest, every year since 1994. To qualify for the award, Albany has a City Tree Commission, ordinances governing tree care, a comprehensive community forestry program, and observes Arbor Day. “Trees in our cities and towns help clean the air, conserve soil and water, moderate temperature, and bring nature into our daily lives,” said John Rosenow, Chief Executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Tree City USA designation recognizes the work of elected officials, staff and citizens who plant and care for the community forest. Trees are a vital component of the infrastructure in our cities and towns, and provide environmental and economical benefits. A community and its citizens that recognize these benefits and provide needed care for its trees deserves recognition and thanks.” The Tree City USA program is sponsored by The National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service.
