Op Ed: Oregon’s Unfair Corporate Taxes Penalize Everyone
Henry Clay Ruark for Salem-News.com
Evasion via “Tax-Breaks” Costs Citizens Billions Yearly.
(EUGENE, Ore.) -
THIRTY-ONE FREELOADERS cost us all taxes from $1 million taxable incomes --via the ridiculous 70-year-old “$10 minimum”, in 2006. MORE THAN 5,000 Oregon corporations earning a profit here PAID NO CORPORATE INCOME TAX “beyond that measly ten dollars” in 2006.
Oregon corporations paid LESS STATE TAX in 2006 than they did A GENERATION AGO. TAX BREAKS now allow many Oregon profit-making corporations to pay ABOUT HALF what was then-due as an equitable share on their gains.

We've got to bring manufacturing jobs back to America. Buy American, folks. Support the American Worker.
(Salem) -
I've got 150,000 miles on my car. I drive more than I'd like to because of my job. but I get 38 miles to the gallon unless I've got the air on.
Not bad. But I'd give it all up in a second if I had a decent electric bicycle. Maybe I'm just one of those guys who is attracted to quirky ideas and designs.
I've got to drive too far each day for that to be a practical option, but still it strikes me as ideal.

Hungary Relives its Nazi Past
Tim King Salem-News.com
Today too many Hungarians are showing their racist teeth again.
(SALEM, Ore.) -
As the world learns of a senseless murder at a museum commemorating the Holocaust in the U.S. capitol, recent European parliamentary elections are signaling a re-emergence of far-right groups in Europe who profess not only anti-Semitism, but an actual desire to wage war against Jewish and Gypsy people.
In the wake of those recent elections that saw far-right leadership move forward in both Hungary and Austria, the Anti-Defamation League said it was "deeply distressing" that the blatantly anti-Semitic parties received so many votes, and called on European leaders to ensure that "anti-Semitism, racism and bigotry never again gain a foothold in Europe."

Human First, Economic Object, Second
By Daniel Johnson Salem-News.com
Economic activity is a human activity, suggesting that economics must be based on some model of human behavior. We are not all capitalists, but we have been duped into believing that Homo economicus, economic man, is a valid model of human behavior.

Kevin Tokar, in his late twenties, had been working for four years as a sound editor for TV documentaries in Toronto. On the job, he often found his mind wandering as he realized that he was more interested in the stories than in his job of perfecting the presentations.
"I found myself wanting to be more involved with the people, places and problems presented on the screen in front of me than I could ever be from my comfy chair behind the sound mixing board."

Open Letter Encourages Sanity in Sentencing of California Medical Marijuana Dispensary Owner
Ed Rosenthal Special to Salem-News.com
Forward by Salem-News.com's Tim King.
(LOS ANGELES, Calif.) -
Veteran American marijuana activist Ed Rosenthal has drafted a letter he hopes will have an effect on the outcome of the sentencing of a California medical marijuana dispensary owner. Charles Lynch was in the opinion of thousands, possibly millions of Americans, completely railroaded by an overzealous California sheriff; one who overstepped his own boundaries countless times in the case.
The most basic information about California state law allowing medical marijuana use was disqualified because Charles Lynch was convicted on a federal level, and the United States government clearly, more than ever, does not respect the rights of states in a legal manner.

Rep Thatcher Says Supporting Small Businesses Means Opposing New Taxes
Salem-News.com
Thatcher spoke against the measures saying, “if those businesses are forced to pay more taxes, then there is less disposable income for businesses to use to hire workers and they may have to lay off workers.”
(SALEM, Ore.) -
Thousands of small business owners will be hit by $733 million in new tax hikes approved by the Oregon House of Representatives today, State Representative Kim Thatcher (R-Keizer, St. Paul, Newberg) said.
During debate on the House Floor today Thatcher said, “We can’t tax our way out of a recession.” Thatcher voted against House Bill 3405 which raises the corporate tax to 8% up from 6.6% on companies with over $250,000 in corporate income.

Raise Revenue or Deepen the Pain
Salem-News.com
The Oregon Center for Public Policy says the legislature must enact HB 2649 and HB 3405 to avoid further harming Oregonians, particularly the most vulnerable.
(SILVERTON, Ore.) -
The legislature will soon vote on bills that would raise taxes on the wealthiest Oregonians and corporations. If the votes fail, or if the measures are referred to the voters and fail there, middle- and low-income Oregonians — those hardest hit by the economic downturn — should brace for even greater pain than what’s already on the way.
A good indication of the kind of pain that would follow from the defeat of the revenue-raising bills — HB 2649 and HB 3405 — is the harm contained in the budget cuts already penciled in. Those cuts are largely set out in the budget that the Co-Chairs of the legislature’s Joint Ways and Means Committee released in late May.
