(WEST SALEM, Ore.) - Salem Fire Department crews were dispatched to a report of a natural gas odor in the area of Glen Creek Road and Cornucopia Street NW that was called in by a passing motorist.

Chris Riffle with Salem Fire says the call came in Wednesday just after 2:00 PM. The first firefighters on the scene reported that workers at a nearby construction site had hit a 2" natural gas line.

Riffle says Salem firefighters used a gas detection monitor to detect the gas levels in the vicinity, including inside the library and post office. Fortunately, the problem did not result in evacuations.

Riffle says traffic on Glen Creek Road was closed from Wallace Marine Park to Wallace Road for nearly an hour while NW Natural Gas workers located and sealed the leaking gas line. No injuries were reported.
