(SPRINGFIELD, Vermont) - A Salem man, with an apparent heavy lead foot, was caught and arrested this weekend for going 141 miles an hour on I-91 in Springfield, Vermont. Vermont State Police spokesman Sergeant John Flannigan said Trooper Chris McCrillis was conducting speed enforcement on I-91 at 8:00 AM Saturday when he clocked a 2006 Hyundai Sonata traveling north at 141 miles an hour. Trooper McCrillis was able to get the driver, 46-year-old Martin Gibbons of Salem pulled over safely. Flannigan says Gibbons had rented the car and said he was on his way to Barre, but could not provide a satisfactory reason for driving so fast. Gibbons was charged with careless and negligent driving and processed at the Rockingham barracks. Gibbons was then taken to the Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield for lack of $1,500 bail. Cur and Steve: Longtime acquaintance with VT-troopers while running daily in Burlington...they much better supported than we hand our guys here...and Vermonters know how to make sure they are on road and ready, too. (No-never did get ticketed, but rode-around many times with them, in chases, too...)

Wow, a Hyundai at 141 mph. First, I did not realize one of them would go that fast...(tailwind), and second, who would want to go that fast in a Hyundai. And last........what an idiot. How many lives did he potentially endanger?

If he were on the Autobahn in Germany, no one would bat an eye. It is all so subjective. I have not heard but maybe American influence has ruined things in Germany too. I just called there this morning and it would have been inappropriate to ask the person I spoke to about this. It was delicate business. But the next time I speak to one of my relatives here I will try to remember to ask him.

If he were here in Oregon they would have issued him a citation and sent him on his way. Maybe Oregon could take a lesson from Vermont.
