(SWEET HOME, Ore. ) - A large rock slide has closed Forest Road 2022, informally known as the Canyon Creek Road, near Sweet Home, Ore. The rock slide occurred along the bluffs located at milepost 5.1, a site that has experienced small scale rock fall for some time. “This is an interesting event, especially given that the failure occurred during the dry season,” commented Mark Truebe, Willamette National Forest engineer and an expert on the geotechnical aspects of this road. “Unfortunately, it is a large failure and the rock bluff above the road still shows signs of instability; we will likely have to close the road for an extended period of time. We will complete a safety analysis and seek funds to repair the site.” Forest Road 2022 is cooperatively managed with Cascade Timber Consultants (CTC); CTC is working with the Willamette National Forest to assess and repair the site. Visitors to the Canyon Creek area can use the following alternate routes: 1. Forest Road 2032 that follows along Gordon Creek is located just east of Canyon Creek. 2. Forest Road 2022-417 that follows along Flim Flam Creek joins Roads 2022 and 2032. 3. Forest Road 2024 that follows along Two Girls Creek. The visiting public is reminded to drive all forest roads with caution, as natural hazards such as falling trees and rocks can occur. Additionally, remember to stay right and drive slowly, as you can expect to encounter other visitors even in remote locations.
