School administrators, fortunately, think things through a bit more when faced with inevitable responsibility. They know, too, that rapid preventive action is best way to teach the whole group what authority is and how it should work --and thus elicit the best possible insights from those the most affected. (Have you "been there" in any such school situation ?)

Having your kid stay home from school because some dope wrote a note on the bathroom stall is moronic and teaches them to fear living their life. They are probably ten times more likely to die in a car wreck than a school bombing. In addition, the fact that the administration and police are all over this makes it probably the safest day of the year to send your kid to school. Get a grip.

It almost seems like a fad - for kids to leave threats at school. Wasnt there a threat at West Salem HS and another school in Beaverton this week? I guess thats one way to get out of going to classes.... (Hopefully that is all it is.)

When I went to high school, the idea of some one bringing a weapon to school was unimaginable. Today, our kids deal with increased security risks--whether from gang activity, disenfranchised students, or any other myriad of situations that can become deadly with little or no warning. The fact that SSHS has had TWO threats in two days (Monday and Tuesday) and that they took them seriously enough to make calls to students' parents leaves me to conclude that the old adage, "Better safe than sorry" is appropriate. If nothing happens, then no harm done--my son will have missed a day or two of school, and will have homework to make up. But, if after receiving the information about these recent threats, if I sent him to school anyway, and something horrific DID happen, our lives could be forever changed. Parents have to make hard choices when it comes to raising their kids, but keeping my son home on these two 'high security' days isn't, in my opinion, one of them--it's a no-brainer.
