(SALEM) - The dash to reserve a state park campsite for Memorial Day weekend is over. According to Reservations Northwest, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department's campsite reservations center, all sites at the 28 parks that accept reservations are booked for the three-day period. However, 22 other state parks have sites available on first-come, first-served terms in every area of Oregon. "Some pretty good options still exist out there," said OPRD Recreation Programs Manager Richard Walkoski. "You just have to be willing to go on that camping trip without the guarantee of having a site for sure at a specific destination." Walkoski added that campers who begin their trips earlier in the week increase their chances of finding a campsite at a desired location. "Generally speaking, those who can start their trips about now and are willing to travel a little farther from home have an easier time finding a site." Many of the 915 campsites not on OPRD's reservable list accommodate RV hookups. Nearly 200 of these sites may be rented at four parks on the coast: Carl Washburne, 14 miles north of Florence (56 full hookup sites); Cape Blanco, nine miles north of Port Orford (54 electrical); Humbug Mountain, six miles south of Port Orford (32 electrical), and Alfred A. Loeb, 10 miles east of Brookings (48 electrical). Holiday campers used to be able to rent sites at Joseph Stewart State Recreation Area on a first-come, first-served basis, but most of that park's 147 electrical hookup and 50 tent sites were added to the reservations pool last fall. The park is on Lost Creek Reservoir 35 miles northeast of Medford. Parks other than Carl Washburne, Cape Blanco and Loeb that offer first-come, first-served sites exclusively include (by region): (Columbia River Gorge) Ainsworth, 18 miles east of Troutdale (44 full hookup and six walk-in tent Viento, eight miles west of Hood River (56 electrical and 18 tent) (Willamette Valley) Cascadia, 14 miles east of Sweet Home (25 sites); Fall Creek State Recreation Area, Cascara Campground, 27 miles southeast of the Eugene-Springfield area (47 sites) (Southern Oregon) Goose Lake, 14 miles south of Lakeview (47 electrical) Jackson F. Kimball, eight miles north of Fort Klamath (10 primitive tent) (Central/Eastern Oregon) Catherine Creek, eight miles southeast of Union (20 primitive tent) Clyde Holliday, six miles west of John Day (31 electrical) Farewell Bend, 25 miles northwest of Ontario (30 tent) Lake Owyhee, 33 miles northwest of Nyssa (31 electrical and 8 tent) Minam, 15 miles northeast of Elgin (12 primitive tent); Prineville Reservoir, Jasper Point Campground, 16 miles southeast of Prineville (30 electrical) Red Bridge, 16 miles southwest of La Grande (10 walk-in tent, 10 primitive tent) Ukiah-Dale, three miles southwest of Ukiah (27 primitive tent) Unity Lake, 50 miles east of John Day (35 electrical) (Coast) Oswald West, 10 miles south of Cannon Beach (31 walk-in sites) Saddle Mountain, 17 miles east of U.S. 101-U.S. 26 junction (10 primitive tent sites) Three reservation parks-William Tugman State Park on the central coast, Prineville Reservoir in central Oregon and Emigrant Springs State Heritage Area in northeast Oregon-also have sites available to rent first-come, first-served basis. These unreserved sites include 52 electrical at William Tugman, 31 electrical in Prineville Reservoir's Jasper Point Campground, and eight full hookup and 15 tent sites at Emigrant Springs.
