(SALEM, Ore.) - The Salem Fire Department had to call in a third alarm, to control a fire Thursday night near downtown Salem.

Salem fire officials say the fire started just after 11:00 p.m. on State Street, and the building housed both commercial and residential units. Heavy smoke and flames made the fire fighting efforts tough.

Local residents tell Salem-News.com say they credit the landlord for going door-to-door knocking to make sure everyone got out safety. At this time, there are no injuries to report.

Salem fire investigators will be on scene today trying to determine what caused the fire.

Salem-News.com will have more on this story as soon as it becomes available.
