(NEW YORK) - Heath Andrew Ledger, a native of Perth, Australia, was found dead today in his apartment in downtown Manhattan New York City police said. Ledger was 28.

According to police, at 3:31 PM, a masseuse arrived at Apartment 5A in the building for an appointment with Ledger. The masseuse was let in to the home by a housekeeper, who then knocked on the door of Ledger’s bedroom. When no one answered, the housekeeper and the masseuse opened the bedroom and found Ledger unconscious. They shook him, but he did not respond. They immediately called authorities.

Police say they do not suspect foul play and said they found pills near his body.

In 1996, prior to his film debut in the 1997 Australian movie Blackrock, Heath Ledger was involved in the short lived Fox Broadcasting Company fantasy-drama Roar. In 1999, Ledger starred in the teen comedy 10 Things I Hate About You and also had the lead role in the acclaimed Australian movie Two Hands, directed by Gregor Jordan.

He has starred in The Patriot, Monster's Ball, A Knight's Tale, Ned Kelly, The Order, and The Brothers Grimm. In 2001, he won a ShoWest Award for the Male Star of Tomorrow based on his performance in The Patriot, and worldwide release of A Knight's Tale. In 2003, he was named one of Australian GQ's Men of the Year for acting.

In 2005, Ledger received a "Best Actor in a Drama" Golden Globe nomination for his acclaimed performance in Brokeback Mountain, in which he plays Wyoming ranch hand Ennis Del Mar, who has a love affair with aspiring rodeo rider Jack Twist, played by Jake Gyllenhaal.

Ledger received "Best Actor of 2005" awards for Brokeback Mountain from both the New York Film Critics Circle and the San Francisco Film Critics Circle. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance. In the same year, Ledger played a fictionalized version of Giacomo Casanova in Casanova. The film, a romantic comedy which co-starred Sienna Miller, drew mixed reviews from critics and failed to find a significant audience among general moviegoers, though it fared better on DVD.

In 2006, Ledger was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.[7] In 2007, he was one of six actors to portray different sides of singer Bob Dylan in the film I'm Not There.

On July 21, 2006, Ledger was officially confirmed to play iconic comic book villain The Joker in The Dark Knight, the sequel to the 2005 film Batman Begins, opposite fellow I'm Not There star Christian Bale. The film is due in 2008.[8]

In 2006, Ledger directed three music videos: "Cause an Effect" and "Seduction Is Evil (She's Hot)" for Australian hip-hop artist N'fa, as well as "Morning Yearning" for Ben Harper.

Vic, I'm not sure what you're saying in your comment, but Tim is not going to allow flame wars to get started. Take it easy. If you're trying to be sarcastic, it's not working.

Anonymous, you had better be more worried about radical Americans that are tired of supporting and going to war for a foreign country (hint, it begins with an "I" and ends with an "L") I'm talking about patriotic Americans, not hatemongers like yourself. There are a lot of us, and we are armed.

So far its not looking like he overdosed or was any sort of druggie. An autopsy is needed before cause of death is known. The only drugs found were sleeping pills, the type that you can't overdoes on unless you really want to die.

I was very sad to hear about this. I noticed about two years ago that on the "Charlie Rose" show he was extremely nervous and felt empathetic toward him. He gave me the impression of being very real and down to earth. He was very intelligent and could not shut his mind off. What difference does it make what people say about you after your dead? It's sad to think that so many people suffer so much and even people with financial resources can not always save themselves from themselves or life's pressures.

What else is new? Typical Hollywood, drugs, alcohol, sex, no morals. Is there anything better to report? How about some real important stories like what's going on with the illegal aliens and radical Islam in our Country? That's what I call news.
