(SALEM, Ore.) - An Iraqi journalist in Baghdad drew worldwide attention today when he threw both of his shoes at President George W. Bush during his farewell visit to this nation of conflicting emotions. They missed the President, but not by much. The man could be heard yelling in Arabic: "This is a farewell ... you dog!" as he was dragged out of the room kicking and screaming. In this part of the world, just showing the bottom of your shoe or foot is a serious insult as it compares the person being insulted to the lowest thing on earth. Hurling shoes at someone is considered an even bigger insult among Muslims. The Iraqi man who threw the shoes at Bush was a television reporter. Apparently Spokeswoman Dana Perino ended up with a black eye from the affair. The man threw the shoes, one after another, each narrowly missing the U.S. President. Bush reportedly said to the audience after the man was removed, "That was a size 10 shoe he threw at me, you may want to know." The man interrupted Bush's discussion about the conclusion of the security pact with Iraq; a contentious matter with Iraqi's. "So what if the guy threw his shoe at me?" Bush asked a reporter in response to a question about the incident. "Let me talk about the guy throwing his shoe. It's one way to gain attention. It's like going to a political rally and having people yell at you. It's like driving down the street and having people not gesturing with all five fingers." "Apparently President Bush may be a bit more accustomed to single finger gestures than the average American," one Oregon woman said. Bush added, "It's a way for people to draw attention. I don't know what the guy's cause is. But one thing is for certain. He caused you to ask me a question about it. I didn't feel the least bit threatened by it." As the United States goes through the final motions of the Iraqi invasion and occupation, it is important to note that in spite of the number of Western media reports lauding the success of the military conflict, most Iraqi people do not see it that way. Most believe that their nation was functional and while seriously flawed, they were able to live for the most part, an average day-to-day life before U.S. intervention. Since the arrival of U.S. forces, hundreds of thousands of Iraqi people have died and a large percentage of those who fight against U.S. and Coalition forces are not people who would have been considered terrorists prior to the current war there. Most people in Iraq feel the United States has done them no favor in invading and occupying their country. Some, particularly those who work for the U.S. government, have a different view and strongly support the U.S. occupation. These citizens however will likely be in danger at some time in the future as a result of that support. PS: Nothing personal in punctuation noted...simply edit/habit, hoping to improve English language, badly interpreted by some. Re agreement, as with other visible actions, sometimes in words, do not count on it. True consensus comes from demonstration of unity via actual actions, familiar to you from military command. Submission may avert military answer, per yours, but not necessrily essential in other areas of society. Observed shoe-throw convinced many persons; not so simple for vote-record, as your own re mixed-msg persona surely makes clear.

HR thanks for agreeing with me on my below assessment. I find that when one is left with only being able to point out my puncuation that they are in complete agreement. Thanks again. Size 12 not a size 10, Pelosi and read should impeach. Bottom line is that 25 million people can throw shoes without imminent summary execution.

To all: Just been reliably reported that shoes were really size 12. Bush's invariable drive to slash all costs affected even his report to the public here --but that should be no surprise !! Speaking of "fool's errand", see who's talking before tuning in ears. ("fool's" is correct form in English, sir)

He's also probably on a list for immigration to the U.S.?! It was good to see Bush's quick physical reaction to the shoe projectile and the humor he used afterwards. Those who dislike Bush (I am one of them) hopefully realize that if this happened to a prez you liked, what would have been your reaction? I have seen hate directed at America going back to LBJ (and before), and it was far more violent then by the way. Of course I imagine some may contest that statement, but would be a fools errand if they knew their history.

To all: Geat opportunity here to learn how millions really feel about us, after decades of U.S. policy seeking hegemony over rest of world. Just seek out www.alternet.com and then click on Comments, on most major stories. The 75 or so on Alternet now tell you much about US, as well as the incident itself.

The journalist lost close relatives because of the war and was recently kidnaped and tortured . Indeed conservative under the same circumstances i as sure you would be all kissy faced and thank Bush for killing your family and causing all the destruction and death deposing Americas former puppet and ally ! My question is, where was the secret service , it could have been a poison dart. Bush was wide open for two shots of the shoe or about a dozen or more shots from an automatic weapon . It was Iraqi journalist who pulled the guy down not security . ?

First, Job well done, Bush. Make a joke out of a jerk like this guy who calls himself a journalist. On the other hand, under Hussain this guy would be executed by now. That's the thanks for sending our troops to that Country, free them from Hussain and then they spit on us. Make these people pay for the war. Pay with gas and with some darn respect. Especially from journalists. But hey, look at our journalism. Just as suck as in Iraq. Bias, and not worse anything. Oh well!
