Inmate Dies in Oregon State Penitentiary

The identification of the male inmate is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon Corrections officials are reporting the unexpected death of an Oregon State Penitentiary inmate that occurred today in the prison's Special Management Unit.

According to Chane Griggs with the Department of Corrections, attempts to revive the male inmate were met without success.

"Efforts to resuscitate the inmate by OSP medical staff were unsuccessful. Emergency Medical Services were called and they were unable to stabilize the inmate. He was pronounced dead at 11:02 AM."

The Oregon State Police have been notified and are investigating the incident. The matter will now be referred to the Marion County District Attorney's office.
