(JEFFERSON, Ore.) - The Jefferson Fire District Water Rescue Team was alerted to an overturned canoe north of the Buena Vista Ferry on the Willamette River early this afternoon. They were able to locate a couple safely. Elaine Parrott with the Jefferson Fire District, says Gary and Barbara Cates were trying to avoid an overhanging branch while canoeing on the Willamette River, when they lost their paddles and the canoe overturned. "The couple and their two dogs got separated at that point. Luckily Mr. Cates had a cell phone and was able to call for help." Parrott says rescue personnel from Jefferson Fire District, Polk County Fire District, and Polk County Sheriff's Office responded to search for the two victims. "They had life jackets but did not have them on at the time," she added. According to Asst. Chief Scott Shepherd of the Jefferson Fire District, "The couple made it to shore and were able to make voice contact with each other and reunited before they were rescued." The boat was also retrieved. The couple had put in at the Buena Vista Ferry and were planning to get off the River at Independence. "The river is a popular place this time of the year", says Asst. Chief Jon Zeilman of the Jefferson Fire district. A reminder to those planning a trip down the river need to be prepared and always have a life jacket for each person, carry a whistle, a cell phone ( in a waterproof container) and always let someone know where you put in and the time you expect to return.
