(ELKTON, Ore.) - Oregon State Police have now received positive confirmation that the driver of a vehicle involved in a fatal traffic crash early Sunday morning on Highway 38 about six miles west of Elkton has died at a Eugene-area hospital. Sunday at approximately 3:50 AM, a 2003 Dodge Dakota pickup driven by 29-year old Steven Roy Gordon of Drain, was eastbound on Highway 38 near milepost 28 rounding a slight right curve when, for unknown reasons, it drifted onto the right shoulder. Police say the pickup drove about 140 feet before going down an embankment where the passenger compartment impacted several trees. Mr. Gordon was critically injured and transported to Sacred Heart Hospital. Hospital and family members have confirmed that he died Monday from sustained injuries. The male passenger, positively identified as 33-year old Michael Ray Cribbins of Yoncalla, was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was using safety restraints. Oregon State Police troopers from the Roseburg Area Command office are continuing the investigation with the assistance of an OSP collision reconstructionist. Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Elkton Fire Department, and ODOT assisted at the scene.
