(VERNONIA, OR) - Vernonia will dedicate its new schools and community center on August 21 at 1000 Missouri Avenue. This is a milestone in the timber town’s remarkable recovery from two 500-year floods in 1996 and 2007 that damaged all of Vernonia’s schools and destroyed much of the city’s public infrastructure and property.

The opening ceremony at 10:00 a.m. will feature remarks by Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici, Ted Kulongoski, Rudy Crew, State Senator Betsy Johnson, and other officials and community leaders. We expect hundreds of people to attend.

The ceremony will be followed by a ribbon-cutting, after which students will throng into their new school in a historic moment for Vernonians and the donors, elected officials, businesses and households statewide who are uniting to rebuild Vernonia’s schools and community center and to restore the heart of this town.

A press availability at 9:30 a.m. will feature people central to the campaign for Vernonia’s schools. Media tours of the new school will begin at approximately 11:15 a.m.
