(SALEM, Ore. ) - Willamette Surgery Center will offer free sports physicals to Salem area middle and high school athletes, this Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at it's facility located at 1445 State Street in Salem. WSC has offered free sports physicals to school athletes for the past 10 years. “On average, we see anywhere from 70 to 200 student athletes each time we do this,” says Suzanne Martinet-Bolton, RN, who spearheaded the project. “Given these numbers, it’s clear there is a need for free sports examinations in the community, and we are pleased to be able to meet this need.” More than 40 clinicians and administrative staff at WSC volunteer their time in order to provide this important community service. Many of the physicians taking part in this program are specialists in sports medicine. In return, WSC asks for a donation, which is passed on to the Wounded Warriors Project. After filling out required forms, student athletes are seen by a team of WSC medical experts who perform comprehensive head-to-toe physical examinations, including assessments of orthopedic health, vision, height, weight, blood pressure, heart and lungs. The physicals meet state requirements mandating that student athletes receive a sports physical prior to participating in any athletic activity. Students involved in all sports and activities from all six Salem area high schools, and all middle schools have participated in the program. Athletes from as far north as Portland and as far south as Jefferson have taken advantage of these free clinics.
