(LONDON) - My name is Lesley Mair.

When the generals in Burma exchanged military uniforms for suits it seemed to me that campaigning for democracy and human rights in Burma would be needed more than ever.  I wanted to make sure that changes would not just be cosmetic, but were followed through with fundamental constitutional reform.

That's when I decided that I'd like to volunteer at Burma Campaign UK.  My chance came in September 2012 when I saw an advert for volunteers in the Burma Campaign News.

Sadly the news last week that the EU Foreign Ministers, including William Hague, have voted to lift sanctions sends out the message that killing, rape, imprisonment and other human rights abuse is tolerable.  This just underlines how much Burma Campaign UK is needed.  You can read more about the situation on Burma Campaign's excellent website.

So on May 11th I will be walking 60km - that's 37 and a half miles to a baby-boomer like me - across the South Downs to raise funds and awareness for Burma Campaign UK with my friend and co-volunteer Pam Skelton. Please sponsor us so that we can continue the campaign for meaningful democracy and an end to all human rights abuse in Burma.
