(SALEM) - Citizen activists took to the streets of Salem yesterday in protest of the Supreme Court decision in the McCutcheon case, a decision that they say, tosses corporate integrity back into the dark ages.

Most Americans are familiar with the notion of "corporate personhood". The Website movetoamend.org, explains how this oddball policy of viewing what are often multibillion dollar corporations as people, has led to the erosion of integrity in our system, where the big dollars often buy their goals.

On January 21, 2010, with its ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, the Supreme Court ruled that corporations are persons, entitled by the U.S. Constitution to buy elections and run our government. Human beings are people; corporations are legal fictions.

On mondaq.com, Caplin & Drysdale wrote of yesterday's decision:

The U.S. Supreme Court released its long-anticipated opinion in McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission this morning.  Through a 5-4 decision, McCutcheon strikes down aggregate caps in federal campaign finance law that have limited an individual's total contributions to all federal candidates, political parties and PACs combined, and which also acted to limit how much federal candidates and officeholders can solicit from individual donors.  Federal law has capped aggregate political contributions since 1974.

Kirk Leonard and Lee Mercer explain to Salem-News.com readers what all of this means...
