Coos Bay Man Arrested for Slashing Throat of Oregon Auctioneer

Deputies located the suspect in a trailer park just over one mile from the auction.
(WOODBURN, Ore.) -
A Coos Bay man is under arrest today for taking out a boxcutter and attacking an Oregon Auctioneer at the Woodburn Auction on Highway 99, South of Woodburn.
About 80 people were in attendance at 11:50 a.m. when 22-year old Jeremiah Thomasson reportedly attacked Chuck Boyce over a two dollar bid. Boyce is an Oregon native and a longtime auctioneer. Friends describe him as an intelligent and considerate individual and express outrage over the attack.

Busy Weekend for Coast Guard in Pacific NW

One incident involved an overturned vessel near Coos Bay; the other rescue saw two surfers rescued near Grays Harbor.

It was a busy weekend for Coast Guard rescue crews over the weekend in both Oregon and Washington. The story serves as a good reminder of how treacherous NW waters can become, and how frequently the Coast Guard is able to complete lifesaving rescues.
The Coast Guard reports rescuing a 73-year old man near Coos Bay, Oregoln, Sunday. A Coast Guard watchstander at the Coos Bay lookout tower spotted a vessel overturned and a man in the water around 2:15 p.m.

Woman Evacuated From Flooded Area in Coquille, Oregon by Coast Guard

The woman was taken to a waiting ambulance at the North Bend Airport and transported to Bay Area Hospital in North Bend.
(SEATTLE) -
The Coast Guard reports having medically evacuated a woman from her home in a flooded area 12 miles east of Coquille, Oregon, Monday.
The Coast Guard Group/Air Station North Bend, Oregon received a request from the Coos County Sheriff's Office at 11:40 AM asking for assistance with moving the 41-year-old woman who was complaining of abdominal pains and difficulty breathing.

Gun Sales Surge in Oregon as the Industry Takes a Dive

An Oregon gun shop owner says the election of Barack Obama has dramatically affected gun sales.
(COOS BAY, Ore.) -
Gun sales in Oregon have slowed dramatically because most of the desirable firearms are sold. Prices on the AR-15 assault weapon and the AK-47 have tripled, according to Coos Bay, Oregon gun shop owner George Davis. He says the shelves are bare at his store, George's Hole in the Wall Gunshop in Coos Bay.
Davis believes the election of Barack Obama put the rights of gun owners in jeopardy. "This stuff has failed time after time, and all the promises Obama made, it was 'yes we can', and now it's 'No we can't'."
It is true that Obama has made a number of moves in his political career that would give fear to groups like the National Rifle Association. Oregon released today that there was a record number of gun sales on "Black Friday", and that the record numbers took place all through November.

Barge Now Positioned for New Carissa Wreck Removal

"Karlissa A" barge being moved from temporary mooring in Empire to wreck site.
(COOS BAY, Ore.) -
Titan Maritime has started the process to position one of two barges by the New Carissa wreck off the North Spit near Coos Bay.
Today, the Karlissa A is being moved to the north side of the wreck. If the weather and tides continue to be favorable, the barge should be placed and "jacked up" out of the water by later this evening, said David Parrot, managing director of Titan.

Coast Guard Searches for Boat in Distress Off Oregon Coast

The searches provided no signs of there having been any vessel in distress in the area.
(SEATTLE) -
Coast Guard rescue crews are responding to a report of a recreational vessel in distress in the vicinity of Winchester Bay, 20 miles north of Coos Bay, Oregon.
The Coast Guard Group at North Bend received the report at 2:00 AM from someone stating that they were aboard the recreational vessel Rubber Ducky and had run out of food and water. Later another call came in stating that the vessel was taking on water.

Coast Guard Joins Fire Agency in Recovering Burned Vessel

(COOS BAY, Ore.) -
The U.S. Coast Guard out of Coos Bay, Oregon and the Charleston Fire Department responded to a fire on the recreational vessel Sea Weed near Coos Bay, after receiving a distress call at 6:30 AM.
A spokesman from the Coast Guard says the motor lifeboat Intrepid crew, from Station Coos Bay, contained the vessel fire by spraying it with foam. The Coast Guard says a 47-foot motor lifeboat was also deployed from Station Coos Bay to assist with the situation.

Barges for Removing New Carissa Wreck Due to Arrive in Coos Bay

DSL has a contract with Titan to remove the wreckage by October 1st 2008.
(COOS BAY, Ore.) -
Two barges owned by Florida-based Titan Salvage are due to arrive in Coos Bay around mid-afternoon on March 29th to begin removal of the wrecked freighter New Carissa which ran aground Feb. 4th, 1999.
The "Karlissa A" and "Karlissa B" barges – each 170 by 80 by 13 feet – will be moored at the Central Dock in Coos Bay upon their arrival.

Removal of New Carissa Wreck from Oregon Coast Scheduled For 2008

The New Carissa ran aground on Feb. 4th, 1999, near Coos Bay.
(SALEM) -
The Oregon Department of State Lands announced Tuesday that removal of the wreckage of the New Carissa cargo ship likely will take place in spring and summer of 2008.
In May 2006, the State Land Board approved a settlement with Green Atlas for the state to receive approximately $22.1 million to pay for removing the wreckage and to cover legal expenses.
DSL staff has begun working with state and federal agencies and Titan Marine to work out the details of the numerous permits required to complete the wreck's removal.

Crew Member Medevaced From 280-Foot Vessel Near Coos Bay

A Coast Guard flight surgeon from Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento, Calif., was informed of the man's condition and recommended a medevac.
(COOS BAY) -
A crewman from a 280-foot vessel was airlifted by the Coast Guard Sunday morning 34 miles off the coast of Coos Bay.
Coast Guard officials said at 9:30 AM, the 13th Coast Guard District`s command center in Seattle received a call from the health provider aboard the fish processing vessel American Dynasty requesting medical assistance for a 47-year old crewmember suffering from a possible heart attack.
An HH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station North Bend, was launched to medevac the man.
The helicopter lowered a rescue swimmer to the vessel.
