<title> New Oceana Report Exposes Nine of the Dirtiest U.S. Fisheries</title>
<description> Today, Oceana released a new report exposing nine of the dirtiest fisheries in the United States.

These nine fisheries combined throw away almost half of what they catch and are responsible for more than 50 percent of all reported bycatch in the U.S., injuring and killing thousands of protected and endangered species every year.

<title> Oregon Researchers Say Ancient Herring Catch Nets Fisheries Weakness</title>
<description> Archaeological data from 171 sites in southeast Alaska, British Columbia and Washington indicate that management efforts along the Pacific Coast need to take a longer view into the past to better protect fisheries for the future.

That is a key conclusion of a multi-institutional study appearing online this week ahead of regular publication in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

<title> Enjoy The Radioactive Fish: Tests Show Fukushima Fish Are Up To 124x Above Safe Level</title>
<description> Are you purchasing radioactive fish at the grocery store? Are you absolutely certain that you know the answer to that question? You are about to read about a test that discovered that a fish recently caught off the coast of the Fukushima prefecture was found to have 12,400 becquerels per kilogram of radioactive cesium. That is 124 times above the level that is considered to be safe.

But it is not just fish caught off the coast of Japan that you need to be concerned about.

<title> Study: Ocean Acidification Killing Oysters by Inhibiting Shell Formation</title>
<description> In recent years, the Pacific NW oyster industry has struggled with significant losses due to ocean acidification as oyster larvae encountered mortality rates sufficient to make production non-economically feasible.

Now a new study led by researchers at Oregon State University has documented why oysters appear so sensitive to increasing acidity.

Oregon, Washington and Idaho may each year kill up to 92 sea lions that have a “significant negative impact” on at-risk salmon and steelhead runs on the Columbia River.

Males of Poecilia parae, a colour polymorphic fish, exhibit five distinct phenotypes: drab-coloured (immaculata), striped (parae), structural-coloured (blue) and carotenoid-based red and yellow morphs.

	        <title> A Fish Story </title>
<description> Historically the Pacific Northwest of North America has been one of those spots in the world where food is usually always abundant. The sea along its coast has always been a good provider, and the most important gift that that sea has offered up is the Pacific salmon that once filled its rivers and streams from far west of Alaska to Central California. That is changing.

This year the return of Sockeye to the Fraser River collapsed and finally the Canadian government is ordering judicial inquiry into why this happened.

Retention of non fin-clipped coho will close on the Yaquina and Nehalem rivers at the end of the regular fishing day on Wednesday, Sept. 23. Both rivers will remain open to adipose fin-clipped hatchery coho through the end of the year. In addition, the Yaquina remains open for chinook salmon under 2009 temporary rules.
