(HILLSBORO, Ore.) - Hillsboro Police officers Jesus Rios and Kevin Harrison were flagged down by a motorist on SW Cornelius Pass Road at the Brown Middle School parking lot yesterday, due to a medical emergency.

Lt. Michael Rouches with Hillsboro Police says the couple in the vehicle had called 9-1-1 while at their home nearby on 211th Avenue because their 16-day old infant boy had stopped breathing.

"While waiting for help to arrive they grew frantic and decided to drive the baby to a hospital themselves. While en route they discovered the Hillsboro Officers at the school doing a security check and they flagged down the officers for help," Rouches said.

Officer Rios checked the baby and discovered that he had a heartbeat but that he was not breathing.

Rouches says Rios administered two rescue breaths and a chest rub and the baby was revived.

"Paramedics then appeared on scene and took charge of the baby and took him to St. Vincent's Hospital. The current condition of the baby is unknown, but the baby was breathing at the time of the transport."

Rios said that after the baby was revived, he smiled at the officer and grabbed the his finger.

Officer Rios has been a Hillsboro police Office for just seven months according to Rouches. He was assigned with Officer Harrison for training. Rios had been a medic in the U.S. Army Reserve 852nd Medical Detachment prior to his employment as a police officer. Rios received his EMT and Basic PT tech certification from Fort Sam Houston Army Medical College.
