Fatal Crash Closes Hwy 101 Near Tillamook for Hours

Hwy 101 is a beautiful drive, but it is too often the scene of tragedy such as this. OSP reminds drivers to be aware, and stay safe.

(TILLAMOOK, Ore.) - A Louisiana woman died Friday afternoon when the vehicle she was riding in was struck by a sport utility vehicle that crossed the center line of Highway 101 near Tillamook.

A Toyota Highlander driven by 43-year old Jesse James Moore, from Tillamook, was northbound on Highway 101 at about 3:24 PM near milepost 67 when it crossed the center line and collided nearly head-on with a southbound Chrysler 300 four-door rental car driven by 74-year old Shirley Scarce, from Lafayette, Louisiana, according to Oregon State Police collision reconstructionist Senior Trooper James Pierce.

The right rear Chrysler passenger, 75-year old Lou Ella Trahan, from Kaplan, Louisiana, died as a result of the crash.

Scarce was transported by ambulance to a unknown Portland-area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Chrysler's right front passenger 70-year old Ella Mestayer from Unew Iberia, Louisiana, was transported to Tillamook Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The left rear passenger, 63-year old Marie Meier from Lafayette, Louisiana, was transported by LifeFlight air ambulance to a Portland-area hospital with serious injuries.

Moore was transported by ground ambulance to Tillamook Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

All occupants were using safety restraints.

OSP troopers from the Tillamook and Astoria offices are continuing the investigation and will be forward results to the Tillamook County District Attorney's Office when completed for review. Tillamook County Sheriff's Office, ODOT and local emergency responders assisted at the scene.
