(SALEM, Ore. ) - Oregon Senator Ron Wyden will be the featured speaker at the opening of 13th Annual Oregon National Guard Ball and Officers Convention in Salem on Saturday.
Wyden will address ongoing efforts to improve the National Guard by making the Chief of the National Guard a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, identifying and providing needed equipment and increasing educational opportunities for GIs returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
In 2009, the 41st Brigade will be sending 3,500 troops to Afghanistan or Iraq. They were sent to Iraq in 2003 and the 41st Brigade Combat Team was deployed in 2006 and returned in 2007.
