Possible Santa Ana Wind event next week is predicted by forecasters.
(SALEM ,Ore.) - Weather forecasters say another Pacific storm moving into the Northwest today will spread rain across the lower elevations and snow in the mountains above 3,000 feet.
A steady rain today will fall along the coasts of Washington and Oregon as the low pressure area moves into southern British Columbia. Some areas of the Cascades could get another foot of snow on top of the record-breaking snow that has fallen over the past week.
The storm track over the next few days will push to the north, sending new Pacific storms toward western Canada. As a result, central and Southern California will remain under mostly clear skies, with just a few clouds filtering into the region.
High pressure building into the Northwest this weekend will create an offshore flow in Southern California. Wind gusts could reach 50 mph through some canyons and over the passes. AccuWeather.com West Coast Expert Meteorologist Ken Clark reports a much stronger wind event could develop by the middle of next week.
"(Forecasting) models since yesterday have been bringing into the Northwest a fairly significant disturbance sometime Monday or Monday night that dives strongly southeast Tuesday. It is behind that feature that most models are showing a much stronger high building with more support, both at the surface and aloft, for winds," Clark said in his blog yesterday. "If this comes to pass, there would be a moderately strong Santa Ana event set in sometime Tuesday night and probably continuing into Thursday."
