Victim Identified in May 3rd Fatal Train vs Pedestrian Incident North of Canby

(CANBY, Ore.) - A man killed last Thursday afternoon when he was struck by a Union Pacific Railroad train as he walked across the tracks in front the southbound train has been positively identified.

The victim's name is being released but investigators and the medical examiner's office have not been able to identify or locate next of kin.

Preliminary investigation by Oregon State Police and Union Pacific Railroad police indicates that on May 3rd at approximately 12:51 PM, 47-year old Kevin Anthony Briggs was walking southbound along the tracks located west of Highway 99E between New Era Road and South End Road.

Mr. Briggs, who reportedly was wearing headphones, was walking with his back to the southbound train when he turned to his right and attempted to walk across the tracks. The train struck Mr. Briggs killing him instantly.

Police say that Kevin Briggs had outstanding warrants issued for his arrest out of Canby (Fail to Appear - Possession of Less than an Ounce of Marijuana) and Wenatchee, Washington (Probation Violation).

Oregon DMV records indicate a Eugene-area address, but he only had a file number issued in his name and had never been issued an Oregon driver's license. Attempts to identify and locate next of kin have been unsuccessful.

Troopers from the OSP Portland Area Command office are continuing the investigation in conjunction with UPRR police. Clackamas County Sheriff's Office and Canby Fire Department assisted at the scene.
