(McMINNVILLE, Ore. ) - Four people are accused of trying to smuggle chewing tobacco into the Yamhill County Jail by hiding it in a prosthetic leg.
Yamhill County Sheriff Jack Crabtree says an inmate faked a fall and damage to the leg, and a former inmate picked it up for repair.
Deputies said when the leg came back, they found about two cans worth of chewing tobacco sealed in foil and hidden in a hollow section.
Police charged inmates 34-year-old Chad William Scott, of Newberg, and 24-year-old Casey Scott Carnahan, of McMinnville, along with former inmates 33-year-old Noah Seth Nicholson, of McMinnville, and 20-year-old Samantha Lurene McMillan, of McMinnville, with supplying contraband which is a class C felony.
Tobacco was banished from the jail in 1991, so contraband supplies are valuable.
A pack of cigarettes goes for about $100 and a can of chewing tobacco goes for about $50 a jail official said.
