One Dead and One Seriously Injured in Crash Near John Day

Fatal traffic crash happened on Highway. 402 east of Monument in Grant County‏.

(JOHN DAY, Ore.) - Police say a Redmond-area man died and a John Day resident was seriously injured Saturday morning in a single vehicle traffic crash on Highway 402 about 2 1/2 miles east of Monument in Grant County.

Oregon State Police Sergeant Gordon Larson says the crash that happened today at approximately 11:30 a.m.

OSP troopers from John Day and Arlington, a Grant County deputy sheriff and local ambulance volunteers responded to a single vehicle rollover crash on Highway 402 near milepost 15.

Larson says the preliminary investigation indicates that a 2006 Toyota Tundra pickup driven by 22-year old Tyler Boyer of Redmond, was westbound on a straight and flat stretch of Highway 402 when it veered onto the right gravel shoulder for an unknown reason.

Larson says it appears that Tyler Boyer tried bring the pickup back onto the roadway but over-corrected and rolled over.

The two occupants were both using safety restraints and airbags deployed inside the pickup.

Mr. Boyer was pronounced deceased at the scene. His passenger, 19-year old William C. Lovejoy of John Day, was seriously injured.

Lovejoy was transported by John Day ambulance to the Long Creek area where an air ambulance was able to land.

He was then transported by air to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, Idaho for treatment of serious injuries.

Larson says OSP Trooper Erich Timko is continuing the investigation.
